People always said that scientists were going to get too curious and go too far.
In the name of science, they have now turned to experimenting on horses. It started with just one scientist and his own horse. He started fiddling with the genes and found that certain things, such as colour could be changed. This finding was discussed with other scientists and a study set up. But it had to be done in secret. For sure, there would be uproar if the general public found out what was going on. A facility was built out in Nevada, as far from settlement as possible. The scientists, now endorsed by the government, began to buy horses. At first, they simply scouted auctions, buying cheap horses that would surely go to slaughter otherwise. Then they moved into the private market, buying from unsuspecting owners who thought their beloved horses would be going to a good home.
There was one major issue though. They needed to find somewhere to put all the horses that they had experimented on. Successful experiments could not be sold back to the public. These horses were strange colours. They had strange markings. Some seemed to have altered mental states. There was definitely something not right. The experiment was on the verge of collapse when a solution was found. The government had a large island in the Pacific Ocean which was uninhabited. The horses could be put there.
So they began to ship out the horses by the boatload. These horses are turned loose on the island where they slowly became wild. All horses that have been experimented on are put here. After all, there is a risk that they carry some unusual genes that could turn up in foals and tip the public off to what is going on. They are in their own little secluded world, unbothered by humans. That is, except for when boats turned up bringing yet another shipment of horses. There are some with strange colours. There are some with weird markings. There are some with unnatural eye colours. There are some which have been affected mentally by the testing. And there are some which seem completely normal on the outside. But are they really that normal? The tests must have had some effect.
