KingChow Chow Mix , 3.5 years , Male . History; King's mother was a show dog. She lived a tranquil life with human companions when she was not out in a ring. She had always been the motherly type, loving and sweet and generally quiet and obedient. Her owners had bred her twice before King's litter, both of which were arranged with other chows to create perfect purebred dogs used for showings and competitions. King's litter was a mistake. At least, in the eyes of his mother's owners it was.
King's mother had gotten out of the yard one day, and had mated with another dog. The father was presumed a stray and was never seen after the incident. King's mother's owners were unhappy about being stuck with mixed dogs that they could not use to pursue their passion of showing, but they did not have the heart to get rid of them. Thus, King's litter was born, a mix between a chow and another undisclosed breed.
The fact that the other dog was stray brought some problems along with the litter, which consisted of three puppies, all of which were male. King was the middle brother when ranked by strength, but was the last to be born. So technically he was the "youngest". The runt of the litter was very feeble and weak, but lived. King and his other brother were not fond of him and did not take much notice of him, for instinctively they knew he would not reach adulthood. The runt brother dies when he was 4 weeks old.
King and his other brother were strong and lively. They were always in competition to see who was the strongest of them. It was a joke between them, a silent challenge, and any sign of weakness was taunted long after. His mother's owners loved the puppies dearly and did not seem to mind their mixed origin.
King's life began to change soon after he was weaned. Luckily for him he was a smart puppy and learned quickly. He would not listen often, and would miss important information form his mother. They assumed this was because in his nature he was rather stubborn and ignorant, and liked things to go the way he wanted them to, but it soon became apparent that his hearing was failing. Very gradually his hearing diminished, and by the time King was one year old he was completely deaf.
King learned to read lips, for by then he had learned his words and he could easily repeat them. His speech became shaky and sometimes did not come out quite right because he could no longer hear what he was saying. The challenge between him and his brother caused tension between them, and soon they became more rivals then friends. King's loss of hearing caused him to be depressed, and instead of the fun and lively puppy he had been he became sullen and brooding. His temper became out of control and he became violent and fought with his brother often.
King's owners soon realized that King was becoming too violent and unpredictable, and they finally agreed to bring him to a local shelter because they could no longer handle him. King was 2 years old by then.
King spent another year in the shelter, where his bad temperament and relatively older age made him not very adoptable. The shelter had considered putting him to sleep many times. King, however, was extremely depressed and sometimes refused to eat. This worried the shelter workers, so they brought him to the vet where they could check to see if there were any underlying problems. The vet suggested that there was a behavioral disorder, but was still unsure, so she kept King at the vet in a crate.
King woke up the next morning on the island.
Personality; King is not the kind if guy that many people would want to meet. He is not the easiest person to befriend, and he likes it that way.
To start off, King is rather cold toward other people. He is generally gruff and resentful of strangers, and tends to only ridicule them (considering he acknowledges them at all). He has a very sadistic view on things, and this leads him to think the worst a lot. His negativeness seems to draw people away and he likes it. King likes to be left alone and often hates the company of others.
King's deafness causes his speech to be hard to understand at times, so he often refrains from speaking at all. He is more of a silent observer, often looking with disapproval. King is very stubborn and when he has an idea he is not likely to change his mind. His pride will not allow him to listen to anyone else's ideas, even if he is proven wrong. This is what makes others call him ignorant. With as many issues as he has about self-esteem, he is unlikely to listen to to others because he is out to preserve his prideful appearance. Sometimes he can even become violent over getting what he wants, because all of the anger and fear inside of him makes him dangerously unstable when threatened.
King is often found on his own, sulking, because he is bitter and sadistic now. He often acts very apathetic when around others. He veils his emotions from everyone. This is very largely because of his fear of betrayal and his fear of ridicule. He is secretly very sensitive about his deafness and this leads him to be cold towards others so that they will not be tempted to bother him about it. He is very reluctant to trust even the nicest of people, but his trust is the very best gift he could offer you, because that is the only way anyone will ever get a glimpse into his heart.
Appearance; King is a pretty unevenly mixed dog. He is certain that he is part chow, and this is proven true by the traits he shares with the breed. The other part of him, however, is obscure, and he is uncertain of what it truly is.
The most prominent chow-shared trait Kind possesses is his build. His bones are rather thick, and his build is stocky and short. His legs are shorter than most dogs, but the thickness is more in his plush coat then actual build. He can take many blows and inflict many powerful hits on another because his build allows him to do so. However, his heavy, thick-set frame leaves little room for agility or speed, leaving him more like a giant boulder: Unmovable with brute force.
King also resembles the chow with his fur, which is soft and plush, but extremely thick. It fans out to more thin, delicate strokes as it reaches the edge of his face. King's torso is covered in his dense coat of white fur. His tail is average in size and the fur is more silky there, just as it becomes more silky at the fringes on his cheeks. His coat is a creamy off-white color, which is what gives him an almost regal look and what was the reasoning behind his name. King's creamy white fur darkens as it comes toward his ears and becomes a slightly deeper, pale brownish color. The difference is very subtle. His ears are flopped over into neat triangles
King's muzzle is probably what sets him apart from his roots, for unlike the chow's mashed in face, he has a long, blocky muzzle. At the tip is a large deep brownish-colored nose that almost matches the darker bits of fur that line his ears. His sense of smell is excellent, for it has to make up for his lack in hearing abilities.
King's most striking feature is his tongue, which is a bruised blue-purple color. He ihereted this form his mother, and he is rather proud of it.
Likes & Dislikes; LIKES: Solitude- King often secludes himself from people anyway, and he loves nothing more then to be able to drift in his own thoughts. Respect- King likes to be respected by others because it makes him feel as if he has purpose, and makes his slightly less guarded. Understanding- He will never admit it, but having someone understand him and care about how he feels is one of the best things to him. Butterflies- Yes it's odd, coming from such a mean guy, but he does love butterflies. They are pretty to look at and don't make any sound so he knows that he is not missing out on anything. Evenings- The evening is his favorite time of day. He loves how the sky changes and how everything seems so peaceful.
DISLIKES Overly Cheerful People-King, being so sad and angry about his own condition, is extremely annoyed by happy-go-lucky types of people. Swimming -Water is fine most of the time, as long as he can stand in it. King hates to swim because his thick fur weighs him down and makes it hard. Taunts- King was taunted often by his brother about how he was weak and deaf. Being taunted and ridiculed is what he hates the most and often makes him violent and aggressive. Lots of People- King is a lone dog, and hates to be around a lot of other dogs. It makes him feel uncomfortable as if he is being judged, and he is mildly claustrophobic. Summertime- Summer is especially hard for King because of his long, thick coat and hatred of swimming. He hates the heat! Goals & Desires; Goals To overcome self esteem issues- These issues are his major weakness and the whole cause for his terrible personality. His goal is to overcome them and be able to live like a normal dog despite his deafness. To become a valuable pack member- Right now King is a loner, but he one day hopes to join a pack and become a dog that is respected and loved by the rest. He wants to be worth something more than anything.
Desires To fall in Love- King really wants to have someone who will listen to him and love him for who he is, no matter what breed or gender they may end up being. To one day hear again- King knows that it is absolutely impossible that he will ever hear again, but it does not stop him from desiring it.
Strengths & Weaknesses; Strengths Physically strong- King is built for power, and his strikes are very strong. He can easily take out a smaller dog. Clever- Since he does not like speaking to others, King is often left inside of his own mind. He thinks often and it has made him smart and clever.
Weaknesses Mentally Unstable- Due to his personality, King can become very aggressive or very depressed easily. Poor Self Esteem- It is his poor self esteem that caused King to become the angry and mean dog that he is. Being taunted or teased hurts him very deeply and only worsens his angry disposition.
LONER.
