ShadyGerman Shepherd Mix , six years old , female .
History; She never had it easy. From the moment she was born it was, "Take care of yourself, figure it out." She never took it personally. Street dogs didn't live the high life, even her parents didn't have it easy. They did what they could for her and her siblings, but she set out on her own as soon as she was able. She made her way through it, her only scar a nick taken out of her ear in a scrap.
Her home was never the same from night to night. Under a porch here, in an open garage there, or wherever else some cover from the elements provided. Her friends were many and varied, but she kept no one terribly close. Not for any reason other than she moved around a lot. It didn't help that, while she'd never start or pick a fight, she was never afraid of finishing one. Street pack leaders often knew her reputation and drove her away for fear the pack would turn on them in favor for her. It was never what she wanted, but she knew she would never be able to convince the pack leaders of that.
One day, a family took her in. She had never been terribly socialized with people, but she had lived close to them, and been feed by them enough that she showed no violence. They had a dog, calm and gentle, more so than any dog she had met before. He didn't mind sharing his house or people with her but never cared to play either. She stayed with this family for a couple days before going to another home, relatives of the people who had picked her off the street. The had two dogs, a handsome German Shepherd who was terrifically easy to tease and play with, and a grumpy terrier/lab mix who insisted on starting fights with her. There was also a young girl who loved her and played with her every day. Her life had never been so good.
Then the Terror, as she grew to call her, started one too many fights with her. The terrier wouldn't give up! Shady had pinned her and done everything she could to make the other devil submit but she refused. She almost killed the white dog in her attempts to cease the fighting. The older female human was very upset and started to keep her in a metal crate. The young girl got more and more angry with her mother for not understanding that the terrier was the problem, and not Shady.
Finally the day came where the mother decided Shady had to go. Her dog, the terrier, was allowed to stay and the young girl and her faithful companion were separated without a goodbye. Into the crate she went and into the back of a van. Falling asleep during the ride, when she awoke she was on a beach - this beach - without a single memory of what happened between the car ride and awakening.
Personality; Energetic. This girl has some spunk, and is very high energy. There is no doubt that she can relax and be laid back at times, but she hasn't done that since her days as a house dog. Her spirit has never been tamed, not by man or beast, just well managed by herself. Her self-control is pretty masterful, but should her limits break that energy is channeled fully into her ability to defend herself.
Fierce. She does not fear fighting, play fighting is one of her favorite things to do in fact, but she does not rejoice in having to put another dog in their place. Nevertheless, she will not hesitate to put another dog on the ground should lines be crossed. She does not tolerate disrespect. If a dog has proper authority, be it size, strength, intelligence, or hierarchy, that's who she'll look to. She does not take kindly to spoiled brat dogs who think they are entitled to whatever they want. It just doesn't fly with her.
Understanding. She's seen it on the streets, and she gets it when thinks are different than how they first appear. However, while she's willing to listen and hear all sides of any story, there will be justice served afterward. And while she tolerates a lot, she doesn't tolerate everything and doesn't like to be pushed with her generosity.
Casual. While part of her is very ordered and structured, she does not fall into the formalities of things as respect is one thing, stoic rigidity is another. She likes to joke around with her superiors and those underneath her in rank, to treat everyone as they are, dogs together on one earth. As long as everyone stays in their place at the end of the day, everyone has fun and no one gets tackled.
Appearance; Not quite as tall as the average German Shepherd, she can pack just as much of a punch. Currently, some of her well toned muscle still remains from her days on the road, yet she's not quite as thin as she was before her days in the house. Between the two, she could be considered both out of shape, and even fat, by street standards while still being a bit too scrawny by human standards.
Her face is a perfect example of a German Shepherd, muzzle long and narrow with a wedge shaped head. Her chocolate brown eyes hold a great deal of wisdom for her short six years of life thus far, and it can be seen withing them when she goes from friend to foe. Her ears are upright, and her tail resembles that of both a German Shepherd and a Labrador. The shape of the Shepherd's tail with the texture, along with that of the fur along her back, of the Labrador.
Her entire coat is thick and black, again the combination of the Shepherd's and the Lab's. As it is practically waterproof with the Lab's undercoat, she never worries too much about being cold or wet, but it becomes very hot and uncomfortable after being out in the sun for too long.
The only mar on her body, though it could be considered akin to a piercing in humans, is a small nick in her right ear from a street battle. She's always considered it something of a trademark of hers.
Likes & Dislikes; + Digging + The dirt between her pads, the earth smell of roots, and the lovely coolness that dirt dens provide. + Water + What better way to clean off or cool down than a swim? Speed may not be her forte, but she can tread for ages. + Fairness + Its all fun and games as long as everyone knows where they stand at the end of the night. It makes her furious to see smaller dogs getting messed with unnecessarily by dogs much more able than them. + Rough Housing + A good play fight is at the top of her list on any day (as long as there is shade of course). + Company + Being around others always makes her happy. Dogs, people, she's always glad to discuss and hang out with anyone.
- Heat - Her thick, super dense black fur can make high heat next to unbearable for long periods. - Brats - There is nothing that gets under her skin like a bratty dog. No one is "entitled." - Unnecessary Fighting - When a dog crosses the line, she'll give a warning. Should they continue to push it, well, she'll put 'em down. She might not want to, and she won't enjoy it, but a dog must know their place. - Direct Sunlight - When the sun shines you can bet it probably won't be on her. In the winter time the sun is one thing, but most of the time it's just another way she gets too hot. - Constant Change - Too much of her life has been endlessly changing. She just wants to be able to say that she's home.
Goals & Desires; * Return home. The only real home she's ever had, with her girl. * Join a real pack. She's never been allowed to before due to the fear of pack leaders. * Escape the Island. At the very least, even if she doesn't make it back to her girl, it'd be nice to be back on the streets.
# Acceptance. There's nothing more she'd love than to be accepted for the way she is. # Real friends. Due to her constant traveling, she's never had a friend closer than an acquaintance. # Stability. All her life she's moved around, a world constantly changing. It'd be nice to stop and stay awhile for once.
Strengths & Weaknesses; + She is a very strong swimmer. + She is very intelligent.
- She is very intelligent. This can be a problem when reasoning just isn't working on another dog. She can't understand what there is to not understand, and well, it can sometimes lead to a fight. - Too hot. Her heat intolerance can make traveling any distance in the sun a big problem.
