ELLIECAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIEL , FOUR YEARS , FEMALE . History; They were the champions of the CKCS showing world. It seemed like in every competition they were the only ones really competing. Sometimes one would win, sometimes the other, but if anyone knew anything about showing CKCS they knew these two dogs. So when the kennels that owned them decided to breed them, naturally the pups were in high demand.
Even before the pups were born they had selected the kennels that the pups would go to, and had a list of who would get them in the case of a smaller litter. This was good, because there were only three pups, and the owners of their father had already requested a male, which left two female tri-colors to go to two lucky kennels.
Ellie was frequently visited by her future owners, and was pampered from the very start. She was gorgeous, and she knew it. By the time she was eight weeks old and ready to leave her mother, she already had an ego as big as the universe. She dreamed of being a world champion, just like her parents. Everyone had high hopes for her.
Every day seemed to be filled with training and grooming; anything to make her the most beautiful, well-behaved CKCS ever. She adored every moment of it, too. The day she was old enough to show was one she greatly anticipated. She would go on and on to the other dogs at the kennel about how she’d swoop in there and wow them all with her amazing good looks.
However, it wasn’t to be. Right around the time she turned six months, her owners began to notice the way she seemed to pause mid-step to scratch at her neck, but wouldn’t actually touch it. They didn’t think much of it until she became sensitive around her neck. Something wasn’t right, and they feared the worst.
After various trips to the vet, they finally concluded she had Syringomyelia; a malformation of the back of the skull which reduces the space for the brain and compresses it through the opening and into the spinal cord. It’s commonly found in the CKCS’s, though is rare among most other breeds. This diagnosis meant Ellie was unfit for showing.
Oh how she was devastated; and her owners, too. They’d spent so much money for this puppy – and now this? If they kept her, she’d only make them broke with all the vet bills. So around the time she was one year of age, they started searching for someone who would take her for a decent price.
It took a while, but they finally placed her with a small family who was willing to take her in. They didn’t quite get what they’d paid for her, but they got enough to be content. Ellie on the other hand was far from content. Her entire life plan had been ruined! Not to mention the fact she always had this annoying pain in her neck.
But the family was kind. The children were gentle, and at least she was cared for. She never was the same after that though. She lost her spark, and stopped walking around like she ruled the world. Sometimes she just wished she could die, but that never lasted long. Life was much to interesting, even if she couldn’t show.
After a long day when the pain was particularly bad, she lay down to sleep, wishing for the umpteenth time that day that she could just never wake up.
And when she does, she’ll be far away from any place she’s ever known.
Personality; Once peppy and stuck-up, Ellie is now only a shadow of who she used to be. Yet, a small hint of her former ways still can be found occasionally in the way she will hold her head high as she walks, challenging anyone to call her weak and pathetic. Or the way she will turn her nose up disapprovingly at mutts, and dogs who don't care about their looks.
However, despite this, she tries her best to be accepting. After all, it's hardly a dogs fault if their parents weren't purebred. Nevertheless, she still can't quite bring herself to view them like to other dogs, and comes off a bit rude around them often times.
Her Syringomyelia is a very sensitive subject for her. If anyone so much as hints towards it making her weak or something, they're liable to be on her bad side forever. She still has that large-as-the-universe ego, and shows no signs of losing it any time soon.
Despite this though, she seems to have a soft spot for any dog in need. It drives her crazy, and if you asked she'd deny it, but she always feels like she ought to do something for sick or injured dogs. It kills her inside to see a dog brought down to such levels. She knows first-hand what such things can do, and doesn't want anyone to have to go through anything like she did.
To anyone first meeting her, she appears quiet and depressed. She speaks in dramatically wistful tones, and seems like she carries the weight of the world on her shoulders. She doesn’t mean to, but as she’d tell anyone who asked, how can she help it when all of her hopes and dreams have been crushed?
The island though, she hates it. She was perfectly happy with her family back at home, what in the world is she doing here on this dirty, wet patch of earth with no one to brush her and bathe her and comfort her when she’s in pain? It’s likely to make her a bit snippy and irritable, so watch out world.
Appearance; Ellie has the appearance shared by all members of her breed; small and graceful. Short legs spring from her somewhat long body, sturdy and well muscled, just as any Cavalier's should be. Standing thirteen inches at the shoulder, she's the typical height for her breed. She's the picture of a perfect dog, for her breed anyways. She likes to think she has no flaws.
Her fur is of medium length, flowing from her body with a slight wave. It looks silky and soft, especially on her long ears. A bit of feathering hangs from the backs of her legs as well as the underside of her tail. She takes great pride in this feathering, for not every dog of her kind has it. She considers it a sign of greatness.
As for coloring, she's a tricolor Cavalier. Naturally than, much of her fur is white. She has various raven-black markings, well broken up across her back. Her head and ears are the same raven-black, though a strip of white comes up between her eyes and fans out. Tan markings can be found just above her eyes and on her cheeks.
Her eyes are a lovely dark brown. They're big and round, just as they should be. She's a master at using them to aide her 'puppy dog face,' and get what she wants. She's almost irresistibly adorable, a trait seen in many CKCS's. She takes pride in her appearance and always tries to be spotless, though she may have to give that up here on a sandy beach without anyone to groom her.
Likes & Dislikes; LIKES BEACH; Something about the sounds of the crashing waves, the cry of the seagulls, and the feel of the breeze makes the beach appeal to Ellie. She could spend all day there. PUREBREDS; Above almost anything else, Ellie values pedigree. She's convinced that everyone should be purebred, and that mutts are essentially useless. However, she doesn't blame them for their 'condition.' BUTTERFLIES; While she doesn't usually like bugs, Ellie finds butterflies to be some of the most beautiful things. She could run around watching them flap their colorful wings all day. Especially if they were flying around a beach! ATTENTION; If nothing else, Ellie loves attention. She thrives on it. If she's alone for too long, she's liable to get grumpy if only because she's not been given any attention. BEAUTY; Her looks, too, were bred into her. Oh how she cherishes it. She always does her best to look pretty, and usually does a pretty good job of it.
DISLIKES STORMS; Lightning's bad, thunder's worse. There's nothing Ellie's more scared of then storms. Not to mention the fact that rain makes her fur all wet and gross! BUGS; Excluding butterflies, Ellie despises bugs. The way flies buzz, crickets chirp, and fleas jump just creeps her out. Spiders especially scare her. MUTTS; She tries to accept them, but can't help but think to herself that they couldn't ever get anywhere in the show ring. She sees them as 'ugly' and 'impure,' and can sometimes be a bit rude to them. SHOW DOGS; Despite her love for purebred dogs, if they've ever been in the show ring, she's sure to resent them for doing what she couldn't. SYRINGOMYELIA; Her condition is the one thing in life she absolutely loathes. It constantly gives her pain, and is the reason she couldn't ever be shown. For that she despises it.
Goals & Desires; GOALS LOVE; One of Ellie's goals in life is to fall in love and have a mate. A romantic love, with that perfect dog. She dreams of it being another CKCS, though may find that love doesn't always work that way. HELP; Another of her goals is to help anyone in need, whether purebred or not. She hates to see anyone in pain, for she knows what it's like. Especially when it hinders them from doing what they love. PROVE; She also aims to prove that just because she may have a disability, that doesn't make her weak.
DESIRES HOME; Above all else, Ellie desires to go home. However, a part of her knows that that probably won't ever happen. But she can dream, right? CURE; She wishes there was a cure for her condition. That ever-present pain is something she hates, and she'd do anything for it to just go away. FAMILY; Ellie also desires a family. Not necessarily blood-relatives, but a group of dogs who she knows she can count on.
Strengths & Weaknesses; STRENGTHS AGILE; Despite her size, Ellie could probably make a fair opponent if it weren't for her disability and the fact she refuses to hurt anyone. She's fast and agile, able to make some sharp turns or something that bigger dogs couldn't. HELPFUL; Ellie rises above her dislike for mutts to help anyone, which is perhaps one of her greatest strengths. She doesn't like having enemies, so she strives to please almost everyone.
WEAKNESSES DISABILITY; Her syringomyelia doesn't usually affect her too much, but it is painful, and some days more so than other. It becomes a weakness not only physically, but also mentally because of her defensiveness about it. SMALL; Ellie is a pretty small dog, and therefore faces some dangers. She's not as strong as the bigger dogs, and is a bit more fragile, so she's got to be careful who she picks her battles with.
