DECALAmerican Pit Bull Terrier , three years , male .
History; de·cal n. 1. A picture or design transferred by decalcomania.
Picture. Design. Image. No matter what word used along those lines, that's what Decal's name and earliest purpose stems from. In fact, his registered name was "Lightning Fast's Get the Picture", in honor of this so called purpose. What exactly was that purpose? To give image and reputation to his handler. Make people think that he was bad and not to be fooled around with because of the brute looking dog he toted around.
Decal was born in the city of brotherly love known as Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a son of Fly Guy, a well known UKC stud dog and who was rumored to be a fighting dog, though it was never proven. As for his dam, her name was Dream, and she easily had one of the most lovable personalities. She was a natural mother, even taking in other litters who were turned away by their birthmother. Decal and his seven other siblings were her fourth litter and most likely her last, as she was going on six years old. But the end of her breeding record truly let out a bang, as the added Fly Guy blood in the puppies really made them something special.
Nearly all of the puppies had great conformation and stack, as they demonstrated when they were put on the table at four weeks of age. Five of them were a nice shade of blue gray like Dream and sometimes were marked with white, while two were a bluish fawn and the remaining one was a blue brindle like Fly Guy. They had strong, broad faces, as well as sharp expressive eyes. Their sale tag easily went between $500 and $600, as they were very fine looking Razor's Edge examples.
The second born of the litter, right behind his sister, Decal was one of the stronger, more dominant puppies as natural pecking order goes. But he was very friendly, often shoving aside his littermates and playfully greeting the visitors who came to see the new additions of Lightning Fast Kennel. Just as his breeder suspected he would be, the crowd pleasing pup was sold fast.
Decal's buyer was a man named Angel, who lived in a row house just outside of Center City. He was alone for the most part, though his young son Angel Jr. sometimes stayed over on the weekends. He'd wanted a good Pit Bull Terrier for some time as an active buddy that could tirelessly walk with him around the city, a considerate playmate for Angel when he visited, plus, the main one and quite selfish in reason, his own personal image boost. He had caught word of the Razor's Edge pups through his friendship with their breeder, instantly clicking with Decal when he went to the pen.
It would soon occur to Angel that his new puppy was everything he'd wanted in a dog. Of course, he was still too small and lanky for anyone to take him seriously, but he'd know that would change within just a few months. But in the meantime, he was having so much fun with Decal. They'd rough house and play together on the floor, go for walks all about the city, and even brush up on obedience. Decal was a fast learner and picked up on the commands with ease, eventually even accomplishing the skill of walking calmly without a lead, though leash laws were set in place.
Of course, as the months flew by, master and puppy soon transformed into master and beast. Now, just as Angel had hoped, people kept their distance when he walked down the street with Decal. His wide jaws, heavy body, and now stubby, cropped ears created a monstrous vision in peoples' minds, plus the bad reputation of the breed itself added fuel to the fire. At this time Angel brought Decal just about anywhere he went, even to his job as a night janitor, welcoming the attention from bystanders, co-workers, and his friends alike. Decal himself welcomed it too.
For two great years, Decal fit snug in Angel's lifestyle, bonding very closely to him as well as his son the certain times he came around. Plus, he was even about to begin a career as a stud dog, carrying his name through bloodlines for generations. But all of that came to an end when he actually was signed up for a breeding to a female named Pearl, supposedly kept at the home of her owners for two days to make sure that it would be successful. It was strange, because Decal doesn't even once remember the breeding taking place. He just remembers being held down while one of the people stuck some kind of needle into a vein on his foot, and before he knew it he was a world away from Philadelphia, on this strange and haunting island.
Personality; There is nothing more irritating to some than an enormous ego. Unfortunately, an enormous ego may not even be enough to describe Decal's attitude. He's a complete show-off, as he would be after parading around with Angel like he did, demanding the spotlight from almost anybody he passes by. He picked up on the belief that he was a real big shot from his owner as well, learning to confidently strut and swagger with ease. But why does he act as if being separated from his home didn't change him?
Truthfully, losing his home did change him. Decal is just too proud to admit it. He's much quieter and less boisterous than he used to be, covering up his loss with coolness and unruffled behavior. His old domineering personality from his days as a puppy has reared back up as well, as Decal is much more willing to confront or challenge another dog. Fighting for real though? Honestly, Decal would be the first to turn tail and back down, even if his breed was bred for fighting. He's all bark and no bite, in other words.
Another somewhat irritating quality about Decal is that he's a total ladies' man. He's a sweet talker, conning girls practically every time he turns around. He makes them believe he really cares for them, when in actuality he's just talking to them for his own popularity boost and to make his ego larger than it already is. Decal likes to think he's the greatest gift to girls, but it's obvious that he isn't.
How did Decal become such a nuisance? It's easy. Angel's persona rubbed off on him. He filled his mind with all the 'macho' behavior. His true colors, the ones from when he was a puppy, were really extroverted and joyous, content as long as he had company. While he will always have some size of an ego now, perhaps a bit of these colors could come back out. Or not.
